Prophetic Visions.
So, what can the silver screen reveal to us about this ancient land, what visions can it inspire us with?
I have been thinking back to the various movies set in Egypt that I have seen over the years, & have to acknowledge that there aren't a lot of them! Of documentaries there have been plenty, perhaps the most impressive being one of the early IMAX movies, which took us soaring to the tops of magnificent pillars, and weaving amidst statuary as if blessed with the skill of flight.
But what of movies? The first that comes to my mind, is the 'Jewel of The Nile', which, as luck would have it, we have in our collection! I got it out the other night & watched, with much hilarity, as the MUCH younger Kathleen Turner & Michael Douglas experienced a bit of, supposed, Nubian culture. In a few weeks I will be able to see whether any of it was accurate! Not a glimpse of the great River Nile in that movie though!
Another one that comes to mind, is that wonderful Dreamworks 'Prince of Egypt'. What I remember most is the fantastic art work. I tried to get it out from Blockbuster, but it was soooo popular that every copy got damaged & they haunt replaced it! What a shame.
A fairly recent movie, starring the wonderful Patricia Clarkson, is called 'Cairo Time'. It was quite a charming movie &certainly gave, what looked to be, a fairly realistic view of Cairo & the likelihood of being hassled. From it I gleaned that I might be less likely to be hassled if I wear a head scarf!!!!!
Okay...I have another confession to make. Up until recently, I had not seen 'The Mummy'. Quite frankly, I wish I still hadn't seen 'The Mummy'!!!!!!! Whilst recently doing some online research for this trip, I came across a young woman's blog & in it she explained that she was inspired to see Egypt (although she was only visiting cairo) because she had loved The Mummy movie. "Oh", thought I, "perhaps it isn't the complete & utter waste of time I expected it would be!", so, in an effort to be openminded...I watched it. All the way through. It was an experience that did not contribute anything of value to my life, or what I expect my experiences in Egyupt might be! I wont speculate on the state of that young woman's intelligence, but I will conclude, that our tastes certainly differ!!
Where's Indiana Jones when you need him!
Speaking of adventurers, here in Adelaide, posters are going up, and buses are advertising that, come 26 Dec, the silver screen will present....drum roll please....TINTIN! Will Peter Jackson & Steven Spielberg's reproduction take us to the ancient land of the Pharaohs? I hope it's still showing when we get back!!
