Temple of KHUN
The current temple was built by the Ptolomies, Cleo's family, descended from Alexander the Great. It replaced the original temple built by Tuthmosis3, dedicated to the creator god, Khun. It took Maspero & Mariette (two French archeologists) 13 years to dig it out of the sand. It has some stunning features, namely the floral, greek styled capitals & zodiac ceiling. It was here that we heard a fuller version of the Osiris story. Part of which is shown on the hieroglyph photo I have attached below. Look for a fish & to the right, a phallus. It seems that when Osiris's body was dismembered, his penis was thrown into the Nile. Therefore it was forbidden for Egyptians to eat fish caught from the Nile, because it was believed that they would have fed from the heavenly phallus. Soooooooooooo guess what we had for lunch!!
