"So you wanna go back to Egypt, where it's safe & secure."
These lyrics from the musical 'Joseph & His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' have been going around & around in my head even though I have never been there, so can hardly be going back, & despite Egypt being less than secure at the moment! Clearly my warped sense of humour kicking in!! However...we ARE going to Egypt for a month, and then on to Jordan!!
Do I hear you asking WHY??
Well, a certain significant person, reached a certain significant age just recently, & that certain someone has had this trip on his 'bucket list' for a long time! With our children involved in their own commitments this Christmas, it was an opportunity just waiting to happen...and we said YES!!
Having grown up going to Sunday School with Egypt as a prominent location for Old Testament stories, it is only natural that we both have had a sense of awe about that ancient land of the Pharoahs! And now...we have a chance to see it for ourselves.
Arent we scared, anxious or concerned?
Not about the protests. Let's face it, we could be going almost anywhere in the world today & have the potential to come upon groups of unhappy people trying to seek a change. No, what REALLY worries me is....TIPPING!
It is an expectation that I dislike with a passion! I fully understand that some jobs get paid pitiful wages & that tips can be the difference between eating a meal or going hungry. Its not the amount of additional money that bothers me, it's the fact that it is paid as a separate entity. As a mathematically challenged person, I LOATHE having to work out how much to pay, let alone the transferring of that tip discreetly as if the rest of the world isnt aware that that's what is happening! More than that....I DETEST having to try & make sure there is sufficient small change in my purse to pay tips! Is there an ATM on this planet that coughs out small denomination notes? Or are there many stall holders who appreciate you paying for a single postcard (that you dont really want) with a 50 dollar/pound/euro note???? I dont think so! So you see, this is my big anxiety about going to Egypt...not guns and protests, but paying tips!!!
How do I cope with this enormous stress?? By burying my head in a book, of course, but more about that next time!!
Great to hear your thoughts & feelings as countdown time approaches for this adventure. It is a journey that you will never forget we are sure with your wonderful enthusiastic husband. Cherish the time. Luv
ReplyDeleteHave a great time and I will be watching - am excited for you. You will always get small change but I agree tipping is ugh!!! Luckily most countries do not have it anymore. You will cope and do not worry about it!!!
